Designing in Coto de Caza

Our approach to this community

Coto de Caza is one of Southern California’s premier gated communities, and its landscape design expectations reflect that status. Nestled in the foothills of the Santa Ana Mountains, the community’s large estate lots—often one-third acre or more—provide the space for comprehensive outdoor programs: resort-style pools, outdoor kitchens, sport courts, fire features, and expansive entertaining terraces. Our work in Coto de Caza addresses both the opportunity of these generous properties and the complexity they introduce. Estate-scale landscapes require careful spatial organization to avoid feeling scattered or disconnected. We design outdoor rooms that flow logically from the home, using grade changes, planting masses, and hardscape transitions to define zones for dining, recreation, relaxation, and utility. Coto de Caza’s HOA architectural committee maintains detailed guidelines governing landscape modifications, including material specifications, fence heights, and plant selections visible from common areas. We prepare thorough submission packages with plans, material boards, and specifications that satisfy the committee’s review criteria and minimize revision cycles. The community’s inland foothill location means hot, dry summers and exposure to Santa Ana winds. Fire-resistant planting, efficient irrigation, and heat-tolerant materials are not optional—they are foundational to every design we develop here. We also account for wildlife corridors and the natural oak woodland character that defines the surrounding landscape.

Climate Considerations

Inland foothill Mediterranean climate with hot summers, Santa Ana wind exposure, and wildfire risk. Cooler winter nights than coastal areas. Low humidity accelerates evapotranspiration.
